What it costs to OCR a book

Anything from nothing to about €36 for one book. Free tools cost time and often cap pages, desktop software costs €69 to €99 a year, and per-page services are cheap but come with conditions. Here is what a 300-page book costs at each, from the vendors' own price pages.

Key takeaways

  • Free OCR exists: OCRmyPDF costs nothing but runs from the command line, and browser tools often cap free OCR at a few pages or one task.
  • Paid browser tools price by time, not pages. Sejda's Week Pass is €5.50, but OCR stops at 100 pages per document.
  • Desktop OCR is a yearly cost: ABBYY FineReader from €69 a year on Mac and €99 on Windows, Adobe Acrobat Pro from €24.19 a month.
  • A scanning service can add OCR for little: 1DollarScan charges $1.00 per 100 pages, but it cuts up the book to scan it.
  • FixMyScan costs $9.99 a week or $79.99 a year, with clean-up included.

The example book

Prices for OCR are quoted per month, per task, per document, per 100 pages or per credit, which makes them hard to compare. So take one book and price it everywhere: a 300-page scanned book, already a PDF, that you want searchable.

All prices below come from each vendor’s own page, checked on 2 November 2026. Euro prices are what the pages showed to a visitor in Germany; we haven’t converted them.

Two lines in that table aren’t OCR for a PDF you already have. 1DollarScan prices OCR as an add-on to scanning your paper book, and vFlat sells text recognition packs ($2.49 for 200 pages, $10 for 3,000) for pages captured in its phone app. Both are cheap per page if you’re scanning from paper anyway.

The costs nobody prices

The list price is only part of what a book costs you.

  • Your time on page caps. A tool that stops at 100 pages means splitting the book, running each part, and joining them again in the right order.
  • Your time on clean-up. OCR reads what’s there. The Tesseract documentation warns that dark scanner borders get misread as extra characters and that skewed lines hurt recognition. Most OCR tools don’t crop, whiten or straighten a whole book, so that’s a separate job, sometimes a separate tool.
  • Installation. Free desktop tools are free in money. OCRmyPDF on Windows needs Tesseract, Ghostscript and uv installed separately, per its install guide.

What a year of scanning costs

If you OCR one book, a free tool or a single paid week is hard to beat. If you have a shelf of them, the picture changes.

Best suited for: anyone with more than a handful of books to make searchable.

Books in a yearSejda Week PassABBYY, MacFixMyScan yearly
1€5.50€69$79.99
12, one a month€66, if each fits in a week’s pass€69$79.99
50Depends how many weeks you need€69$79.99

These are list prices only. They don’t include the hours spent splitting, cropping and cleaning, which is where a whole-book tool saves the most.

Handwriting costs more

Everything above reads printed text. Handwritten letters, registers and diaries need handwriting recognition, which is priced differently. Transkribus uses credits: 1 credit per page for handwritten text recognition, 50 free credits a month, and its Scholar plan at €99 a year for 900 credits. FixMyScan doesn’t read handwriting.

What you get from FixMyScan

$9.99 a week or $79.99 a year covers unlimited books under fair use of 5,000 pages a week, one book processing at a time.

  1. Upload the scan. PDF or DjVu, up to 1,000 pages.
  2. Draw one crop over 50 stacked pages.
  3. Get the book back cleaned and searchable: pages straightened, paper white, text black, pictures kept in greyscale, and hidden text under every page.

Questions

How much does it cost to OCR a book?

For a 300-page book: nothing with OCRmyPDF or Adobe's free online OCR, €5.50 for Sejda's week pass, run in three 100-page parts, €69 to €99 a year for ABBYY FineReader, $3.00 for OCR alone at 1DollarScan on top of its scanning fee, or $9.99 for a week of FixMyScan, clean-up included.

Is there a free way to OCR a whole book?

Yes. OCRmyPDF is free and open source, and adds a searchable layer to a PDF of any length, but it runs from the command line. PDF24 advertises free tools with no limits, though we haven't tested it on a long book.

Why do online OCR tools limit pages?

OCR takes real computing time per page. Free tiers keep the cost down with caps: Sejda's free OCR stops at 10 pages and iLovePDF's free plan allows one OCR task of up to 15 MB.

Is Adobe Acrobat's OCR free?

Adobe's online OCR tool is free to use but needs you to sign in to download, and states no size or page cap. Acrobat Pro costs €24.19 a month on annual billing, as shown to us from Germany.

How much does OCR cost per page?

1DollarScan charges $1.00 per 100-page set, so one cent a page. vFlat's in-app text recognition costs $2.49 for 200 pages or $10 for 3,000. Most other tools charge by time, not by page.

Do I need to clean a scan before OCR?

It helps a great deal. The Tesseract OCR project notes that dark borders get read as extra characters and that skewed lines reduce accuracy. Paid OCR alone doesn't crop, whiten or straighten the book.

Why are some prices in euros?

Those vendors' pages showed euro prices when we checked them from Germany on 2 November 2026. We haven't converted them, because each vendor sets its own price per country.

What does FixMyScan cost?

$9.99 a week or $79.99 a year, for unlimited books under fair use of 5,000 pages a week, up to 1,000 pages a book, one book at a time.
