Getting your book in

Which files can I upload?

Scanned PDFs and DjVu files, up to 750 pages a book, or 1,000 on a paid plan. A DjVu file comes back as a PDF. See DjVu to PDF.

Can I upload before I sign in?

Yes. Drop a PDF or DjVu file on the upload page, then sign in, and the book is ready for its crop. If you don’t sign in within an hour, that upload is deleted.

How many books can I run at once?

One book is processed at a time. When it is ready, start the next.

What if a book fails?

It isn’t counted. Try again, or write to us and we’ll look at the file.

Cropping and cleaning

Which crop should I choose?

There are four. Auto finds the text and trims the scanner edges. Tight closes in on the text. Keep a writing margin keeps half the trimmed edge, with room for notes. No crop leaves the pages as scanned. The crop applies to every page. When left and right pages sit differently, each side gets its own box, found automatically; switch Left and right sides off for one box. Pick where new books start in Settings. More in crop PDF margins.

My scan has two pages on every image

When two-page scans are found, the crop screen shows the fold line and three choices: Don’t split, Split, or Split and crop with a box for left pages and one for right. Drag the line if it's off. Books that read right to left come out in the wrong order, so choose Don’t split for those. See split two-page scans.

My pages are grey or yellow

Plain text pages come back pure black on white. Pages with pictures stay in greyscale, so the pictures survive. In Settings you can choose Black and white, Clean greyscale, or Keep original, which only adds searchable text. See grey background.

My pages are crooked

Slightly tilted pages are straightened, so the lines run level and the crop doesn’t cut into them.

What are “pages to check”?

Pages that may need your eye: a blank page, an unusual crop, faint text, or an illustration kept grey. For each one, choose Keep the fix or Use original, then Finish.

Do my page numbers stay the same?

The printed numbers do. Every page stays in order with its printed number untouched. When two-page scans are split, the PDF has more pages than the scan, so its page count goes up.

Search and text

Can I search, highlight and copy the book?

Yes. Every page is read and hidden text goes under it, so search, highlight, copy and dictionary look-up work. See make a scan searchable.

Which languages can it read?

19: Ancient Greek, Arabic, Chinese (Traditional), Dutch, English, French, German, German (Fraktur), Greek, Italian, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Sanskrit, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil and Ukrainian. Most are found automatically. Ukrainian and Greek you choose yourself: on the crop screen for one book, or under Text recognition language in Settings for every book.

Does it read handwriting?

No. It reads printed text.

Can I get an EPUB instead?

No. Your book stays a PDF, with every page, picture and footnote where it was. See scanned PDF or EPUB.

Your Kindle and e-readers

How do I get the book onto my Kindle?

Download the PDF and send it with Amazon’s Send to Kindle. It takes PDFs up to 200 MB on its website and 50 MB by email. See the Kindle guide.

Send to Kindle won’t take my file

Check the size first: 200 MB on the website, 50 MB by email. Clean black-and-white pages usually compress far better than grey scans. See Send to Kindle not working and PDF too big for Kindle.

The text is too small on my screen

A PDF shrinks the whole page, margins included, to fit the screen. Cropping the margins makes the text fill more of it, and the Tight crop closes in furthest. See PDF text too small.

Can I write on it on a Kindle Scribe?

Yes. Send it with Send to Kindle rather than a USB cable: Amazon says handwriting isn’t supported on PDFs loaded over USB-C. See the Kindle Scribe guide.

Does it work on Kobo, reMarkable and other e-readers?

Yes. You get a standard PDF. reMarkable’s web app and USB transfer take files up to 100 MB. See Kobo and reMarkable.

Can you email me when a book is ready?

Yes. Switch on “When a book is ready” in Settings, and you get a link to download it.

Account and billing

What do the plans cost?

$9.99 a week or $79.99 a year, billed today, for unlimited books under fair use, up to 1,000 pages a book. See pricing.

What does fair use mean?
